Things A Colombian Woman Will Appreciate On Valentine’s

Are you Colombian? Yes? No? Maybe? Well, is your partner Colombian? Well, if they are, then you better check the calendar.

While it is true that Colombian culture has a celebration of love that is altogether separate from Valentine’s days, the 14th of February is still your cultural celebration of love and you really want to share that aspect of your culture with her, especially since maybe you didn’t get to celebrate the way you wanted to before she was in your life so now you kind of want to make up for lost time.

So you take it upon yourself to share that one aspect of your culture with the Colombian woman who chose to give you a shot and say yes when you asked her out on a date and you’re grateful that she said yes because you might have assumed that Colombian women dating you was kind of a long shot.

You book a reservation at a great restaurant. You get all dressed up because you got somewhere to go. You may even book a plane ticket so that you and your partner are in the same physical place when the 14th of February rolls around, either you go to them or you get them to you.

But there’s one aspect of your cultural celebration that you haven’t gotten done yet, one aspect that you really want to introduce her to. But it’s the aspect that gives you the most pause because either you don’t know what a good choice would be or there are so many good choices that you find yourself unable to make one. Now you’re kicking yourself because you’ve managed to find love and now you think you’re going to mess it all up again.

But whether there are too many choices or not enough choices, making a decision is a whole lot easier when you put everything down in a list.

Flowers and chocolates

Since you’re actively trying to share your culture with someone from Colombia, you’re going to want to start with a gift that’s synonymous with the occasion - that gift being the combination of flowers and chocolates.

But the thing is that you can’t just stop by a convenience store and grab a candy bar. No, for the chocolate, it has to be special. It doesn’t have to be some artisan chocolate made in the Swiss Alps, but it does have to come in a box shaped like a heart. The chocolates themselves can be the same as the kind you buy every other day of the year, they just have to come in a heart-shaped box.

But try to get some really good chocolate, though. Colombia is home to some of the best cacao in the world, which means that they make some of the best chocolate in the world. The over-processed sugar cubes you buy at a drugstore might not cut it with your partner’s taste buds. You’re sharing your culture with her, but maybe leave out some aspects of it. You don’t want to give her culture shock.

As for the flowers, try to get long-stemmed red roses unless she’s allergic to them. Long-stemmed red roses are romantic.

Your login to a streaming service

If you haven’t already given your login, then Valentine’s Day is the time to do it. Sure, you could get her her own subscription, but you’ve already got one and all she needs is your login. By letting her into your account, she’ll be able to watch movies and television shows, some of which are set in Colombia. It might not always be the most accurate of representations but it’s something.

Not to mention by letting her in on your account, you’ll be able to watch movies and television shows together by setting up a video call when time zones aren’t getting in the way. Be forewarned that regional coding may limit the content that’s mutually available in your areas.

A gift card

If you’re dating a Latina, you’ll probably notice that they’ve got some pretty strong wills. They like to be in control of their own destinies. So give her control over what she gets during Valentine’s Day by giving her a gift card. Gift cards are great because they function a lot like cash but they’re nowhere near as impersonal as just giving someone a wad of bills stuffed into an envelope.

The biggest drawback is that unlike cash, gift cards are not universal. If you buy a gift card from Establishment A, it can only be used in Establishment A. Establishment B won’t accept it. So you’re going to have to balance out the pros and cons of gift cards versus straight cash and come to your conclusion based on what you’re comfortable with. Though the impersonality of cash might not be much of a factor for a person whose culture does place that much importance on Valentine’s Day.

A stuffed animal

Another gift that’s pretty popular on Valentine’s Day is a stuffed animal, typically with some declaration of affection stitched somewhere prominent, like the belly. The great thing is that they can be pretty inexpensive if you stop by a convenience store and grab a teddy bear from the Valentine’s display.

Or you could splurge a little bit and get something custom made. But you better decide soon if you want it in time for Valentine’s Day because a custom-made stuffed animal may take a few weeks to construct and deliver.

With all the energy you’ve spent on finding the perfect gift, you may have let another important thing slip your mind - the dinner wherein you and your partner are supposed to spend a significant amount of time together.

Look, even if you eat other meals together, the dinner on Valentine’s Day has to be special. Make a reservation at a fancy restaurant. If you can’t do that, find a recipe so you can make food at home. Just make sure that it’s as special as she is to you. If you can do that, then a good gift is just icing on the cake.
