Is Medellin Safe for Solo Travelers?

Is Medellin safe? Yes, but that doesn’t mean you should stop being cautious.
Is Medellin safe for solo travelers?
Yes! It is.
Once known as the most dangerous destination in the world, Medellin saw an increase of 1,400,000 international visitors in 2022, 20% of whom were from the United States (MedellinColombia.co n.d.).
That’s a lot, considering the city’s rough past. Like, have you seen Narcos?
From the murder capital of the world to a city of innovation
Medellin had quite a turnaround, from being home to the most well-known drug cartel run by Pablo Escobar to being the most innovative city in the world.
A new era of change boomed when locals applied the Blue Ocean strategy to specifically target the least developed areas, like slums and marginalized communities, to restore peace and safety (The Blue Ocean Team 2022).
One good example is how Medellin’s metro cable connects poor neighborhoods on the hillside to schools, healthcare, and basic amenities, ultimately reducing poverty and crime.
The city is actively embracing its ugly past to make it something that people want to visit.
However…
How safe is Medellin?
While the city is safe enough for solo travel, that doesn't mean you’re not at risk of becoming a victim of some crimes.
Medellin has drastically changed over the years. However, not all its places should be cruised nonchalantly.
There is still cause for concern.
Much like any other city in the world, you can never truly remove bad people. Gangs and petty street crimes still exist in the city of Eternal Spring.
The best way to stay safe in Medellin is to never put yourself in a dangerous position in the first place.
For example, walking around a crowded street with fancy jewelry or a bulge of cash in your pocket only invites trouble from local pickpocketers.
Similarly, walking alone at night on an empty street is one way for you to go missing. Picking up women from a red-light district is how men often end up on the front page of the news.
And buying drugs—well, you don’t need any explanation for that; you already know.
But is Medellin safe if you only stay in tourist areas? Yes and no.
Even a friendly hello can be dangerous in some cases.
Medellin’s busy tourist areas are hotspots for scammers and beggars. You can’t walk more than half a block without being approached by some kid whose goal is to leave you cashless.
It can be troublesome to talk to such people. However, they’re pretty harmless if you don’t engage. It's best to ignore people who seem suspicious.
So, always have your wits about you, trust your gut, and never let people take advantage of you.
Is a trip to Medellin worth it?
A million times yes!
But is Medellin safe? Well, this city is only as safe as you make it out to be.
Compared to the past, Medellin has made significant progress in making the city safer for group and solo travelers.
As long as you use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings, you shouldn’t have a problem staying safe, no matter where you are in the city.
