Medellin Colombia is a remarkably photogenic and Instagrammable city with numerous picturesque parks, art-filled galleries, and magnificent architectural wonders — all pleasing to the eyes and, of course, the camera lens.

As a tourist, it’s advisable to document your travel while in this beautiful metropolis so you can have something to share with people back home and with your online followers.

With that said, we’ve rounded up some of the best must-see places in Medellin that are considered Insta-worthy locations. Remember to grab your cameras so you can fill your Instagram feed with breath-taking travel photos.

Whether you are looking for inspiration for your next travel or already have a Colombian trip planned, here are some interesting places in Medellin you should visit or, at least, drop by for a quick photo session.

Plaza Botero

Plaza Botero is home to the numerous giant sculptures created by world-renowned Latin artist Fernando Botero -- most notably known for his signature style known as “Boterismo.”

In this plaza, you’ll find Botero’s 23 bronze statues that share the similar characteristics of being exaggeratedly large, bulbous, fat, or full-figured. Definitely an interesting sight to see.

These masterpieces are strategically scattered around the 75, 347 square foot plaza, making the whole space an open museum.

Non-locals and tourists alike will find themselves drawn to the unusually larger than life figures.

Over time it became a tradition amongst locals and tourists to have a photo with each sculpture.

Before you leave the site, make sure you complete all 23 pictures with each of the voluptuous artworks.

Museo de Antioquia

Adjacent to Plaza Botero is the museum that houses most of Botero’s works -- Museo de Antioquia.

It’s one of Medellin’s most popular art galleries. Without a doubt, a must-visit for tourists.

With over 5, 000 exhibits displayed all over the three-story building, one hour won’t be enough to tour this art-packed structure.

However, when taking photos inside the premises of the museum, there are a few restrictions to keep in mind:

  • Please don’t exceed and step-over the gray lines drawn on the floor. They indicate the allowable distance between the viewer and the work.
  • Even if there are no gray lines in sight, keep a respectable distance.
  • Generally, you’re not supposed to touch the art pieces. But for exhibitions with interactive features, you can.
  • Taking photos with a flash is strictly prohibited when inside the exhibition halls. You’re allowed to take photos, but you need to turn the flash setting off.
  • The use of tripods and selfie sticks is also not allowed.
  • Lastly, taking panoramic shots inside the museum is allowed. What’s not allowed is taking detailed photographs of the works.

Most of these rules exist to protect the art collection and works so that future generations can still enjoy them.

You can still take Insta-worthy pictures while observing these restrictions.

Comuna 13

What was once known as a murder district where gang violence was prevalent is now a bright, peaceful, and colorful neighborhood often visited by tourists for its vibrant street art.

For the locals, the graffiti and murals painted on the barrio walls are more than just pictures. It represents their history and the conflict that used to plague their community.

The rainbow-like rows of houses represent a hopeful and prosperous future for the people and their children.

If you want to get more in-depth on Comuna 13's story, some companies offer walking tours. The tour guide will walk you through the streets while educating you of the experiences the locals endured before the location was made an attraction.

Parque Arví

Easily one of the most Instagrammable spots in Medellin is the ecological reserve located in the Aburrá Valley.

The park stretches across 39, 500 acres of land and is known as one of Colombia’s greenest spaces. Perfect for people who enjoy being surrounded by nature.

With 54 km of walkable trails, you’ll surely find tons of spots and spaces where you can take the most beautiful photos worthy of the Instafeed.

Parque Lleras Medellín

Medellin Colombia’s nightlife is centered around Parque Lleras where you’ll find tons of bars and nightclubs good for drinking and dancing.

Though the area is known as the party district, there’s more to this location than partying and getting drunk.

During the daytime, you can chill out and enjoy a cup of coffee from cafe houses. Or, dine in one of the surrounding restaurants that has a wide selection of cuisines you can try.

Most visitors describe the day scene of the park as having a bohemian atmosphere. You’ll definitely get an Insta-worthy photo even while in the streets.

Jardín Botánico

A place where you can soak up nature. These botanical gardens house over 4, 500 species of flowers scattered over its 35 acres of land area.

Aside from the flora, you’ll also get to see a variety of animals such as large iguanas who roam freely around the garden. They usually make themselves visible on trees which makes for fantastic photo shoots.

For those who prefer taking photos with plants over animals, you can visit the Orquideorama. It is a 50-foot high garden canopy that exhibits several collections of orchids, carnivorous plants, trees, ferns, and other species of flora.

Designed to mimic nature, this architectural wonder draws inspiration from the concept of hexagonal flower-trees.

While aesthetically pleasing, it is quite multifunctional. It was structured to accommodate visitors by providing ample floor space and shade; at the same time, designed to support the vegetation of plants grown under its pillars.

Capturing the Beauty of the City of Eternal Springs

Taking pictures is important when traveling to new locations. The photographs help us remember the spectacular places we’ve been to, the people we’ve interacted with, and the food we’ve tried.

On the other hand, it’s great to share with other people in our life. There is so much culture and history to learn and discover beyond our own country: Some people share photos on Instagram to give their followers a small glimpse of the world that exists outside.

If you find yourself in Medellin Colombia, remember to document your experience through photography. Not only does it help preserve your memories, but it forces you to make an extra effort to witness moments you would have otherwise missed.
